Ireland stays strong in the sports they’ve always done well with, while attaining their personal bests in other events.
MONDAY:
SWIMMING: Sycerika McMahon took 3rd in her 200M medley heat but it was not enough for her to qualify for the semis. A personal best time of 2:14.76 left her in 22nd overall and eliminated.
SAILING: Annalise Murphyenjoyed a fantastic start to her Olympic quest, winning both her races in the women’s Laser Radial and currently placed in first overall.
Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern lie in sixth position overall after their two races. They finished fourth in the morning’s Men’s 49er, finishing 30 seconds behind the French team consisting of Emmanuel Dyen and Stephane Christidis, who recorded a time of 29:05.
In their second race they finished in eighth place (1:01) behind winners Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen of Australia. There are 13 races to go.
EQUESTRIAN: Michael Ryan was eliminated from the equestrian cross country after a fall. Both rider and horse were uninjured.
SUNDAY:
BOXING: Adam Nolan progressed to the next round of the Welterweight division after defeating Ecuador’s Carlos Sanchez Estachio 14-8.
SWIMMING: Melanie Nocher finished 3rd in her 100M backstroke heat, however a time of 1:02.44 left her 33rd overall and she has been eliminated. Sycerika McMahon placed 8th in her 100M backstroke heat, however with a time of 1:08.80 she was 26th overall and eliminated. Finally the biggest disappointment of the day was Grainne Murphy who finished 8th in her 400M freestyle heat with a time of 4:19.07, far from her personal best and seeing her eliminated.
SAILING: Peter O’Leary and David Burrows finished in 6th in the star race, leaving them lying in 2nd overall.
EQUESTRIAN: Ireland’s team lies in 10th place after day two of the three day event.
CANOEING: Ireland’s Eoin Rheinisch recorded a time of 90.72 on his second run of the canoe slalom heats, combined with his first run time of 89.87 sees him qualify for Wednesday’s semi final.
BADMINTON: Chloe Magee defeated Egypt’s Hadia Hosny 21-17, 21-6 in her group match.
SATURDAY:
BOXING: John Joe Nevin defeated Denmark’s Dennis Ceylan in the Bantamweight qualifying round by a score of 21-6 to progress to the next round. Darren O’Neill also defeated Nigeria’s Mudeen Akanji in the Middleweight qualifying by 15-6 to progress to the next round.
SWIMMING: Barry Murphy swam in the 100M Breaststroke however finished in 8th position and was eliminated.
GYMNASTICS: Kieran Behan finished 16th out of 21 in his qualifying event, and with only eight progressing it sees his Olympic journey come to an end.
ROWING: Sanita Puspure finished third in her heat for the Women’s single sculls and progresses to the next round.
CYCLING: The Irish team failed to achieve medal positions in the men’s road race. David McCann finished 55th, Nicolas Roche 89th and Daniel Martin 90th.
JUDO: Lisa Kearney was landed a tough opening to her Olympic quest in the form of world number two China’s Shugen Wu. Unfortunately she lost her match and has been eliminated from the games.
