Dublin Police have launched an investigation after a Monet painting was seriously damaged during an incident this morning at the National Gallery.
The painting, entitled Argenteuil Basin with a Single Sailboat (1874), had to be removed from display while the damage is being evaluated by the Gallery’s conservation team.
“It is a shocking and very regrettable incident and I would like to praise the Garda Síochana (Police Officers) and the NGI staff in dealing promptly with the matter,” said Sean Rainbird, Director of the National Gallery of Ireland.
