Charlie Chaplin spent over a decade of summer holidays with his brewed of seven children on the shores of Waterville, Co Kerry, Ireland at the Butler Hotel and eventually bought property there. Mr. Chaplin at 54 years was wed to Oona O’Neill, who at 18 years of age was the daughter of famous American playwright Eugene O’Neill.
Waterville is historically known as An Coireán, meaning “the crescent” in Irish, is a village in County Kerry, Ireland, on the Iveragh peninsula. The town is nestled between Balinskelligs Bay & Lough Currane. It is surrounded by mountains and lakeland with the added advantage of having the sea at its doorstep.
Charlie frequently visited Waterville village, eventually keeping several homes in the vicinity. His family still vacation here. The local community erected a statue of Charlie in 1998 and since that time it has become one of the most visited statues in Ireland.
