Yes, we realize it may be Lent, but then if you did give up chocolate for the 40 days then don’t worry as this magnificent sculpture won’t be gobbled up until it’s completed it’s month-long gig touring Ireland. This weekend, the food artist Prudence Staite who hand sculpted the life-size version of the iconic Molly Malone statue out of Cadbury Dairy Milk will be on display at the Dundrum Town Centre.
According to Cadbury, the artist, who has also made edible paintings and sculputures of Elton John, Cherly Cole and Piers Morgan, wanted to build a subject that “reminded her of Ireland”. She was helped through a huge vote of confidence by the Cadbury Ireland Facebook community to re-create the iconic Molly Malone.
Over four days, visitors to Dundrum Town Centre got to see the creation take shape from bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk to the final work of art, which was finished on Sunday afternoon. Those that cannot make it to Dundrum are able to view a live stream of the action on the Cadbury Ireland Facebook page via the dedicated Live Chocolate Sculpture tab.
As well as her sculptures of well-known personalities and celebrities, Staite has also sculpted a range of landmarks including a cheese recreation of the Eiffel Tower, a chocolate garden and a life-size chocolate room with solid chocolate fireplaces.
She works with non-traditional materials to create her works of art with materials including pizza dough, bread, cheese, fruit, vegetables, bacon, cake, cookies, potatoes, butter, sugar, rice, pulses, apples, jelly, ice cream and now Cadbury Dairy Milk.
And remember, if you did happen to give up chocolate for Lent then a chunk from this sumptuous, sugary and particularly tasteful work of art will be well worth your wait.
